US POWERBOATING 
Post Online Education Test

 
The powerboat handling test is both for fun and learning.  If you fail the test, you will be prevented from retaking any of the tests for 10 minutes to allow you to review the material.   Once submitted, the computer will grade the test and notify you which questions you have missed.  If you pass, you will be asked if you wish to submit the test

 

 

-via e-mail.  If you do, an answer sheet will be sent back to you.  All information submitted in the form and test will be held in confidence.  

NOTE: This test is based on the boating skills depicted in the boating maneuver videos and the knot videos on this site.    Please view these before taking the test.

Ten questions, a score of 70% is required to pass the US SAILING Powerboat Test.

Powerboat Questions: 

1.  When performing a turn with a single screw outboard in a restricted area:

position the motor (helm) full  right and apply full power.
leave the helm centered while alternating between forward and reverse.
first apply medium power and then position the motor so the boat will turn in the direction you want to go.
first position the motor, then apply  short applications of power in the idle range.
      Alternate between forward and reverse while turning the helm in the appropriate direction.

2.  The maneuver in question # 1 is called a:

  axis turn.
  pivot turn
  barrel turn
  hawse turn.

3.  If the boat operator observes a person falling overboard, the first reaction should be:

  apply full reverse to the engine
  turn the boat sharply away from the side that the person went over
  swing the stern away from the person
  depends if the person was wearing a PFD or not.

4.  It is generally best to approach a person in the water from:

  dead down wind
  into the current
  with the sun at the operator's back
  at high speed

5.  To stop a boat quickly and safely when at high speed :

  put the engine immediately in full reverse
  position the throttle in forward idle and almost simultaneously turn 90 degrees then shift to neutral.
  activate the kill switch (pull the lanyard)
  gradually reduce power to avoid having the wake come over the transom

6. The knot used to tie (bend) two lengths of line together is called a:

  Clove Hitch.
  Figure Eight
  Round Turn and two Cleat Hitches.
  Sheet Bend.

7. The knot used for placing a loop in the end of a line is the:

  Granny Knot
  Carrick Bend
  Bowline
  Figure Eight

8. To avoid having the stern of your boat swing into the dock when you depart, it is best to:

  Back away
  Push off the dock vigorously with your hands.
  Push off the dock vigorously with one leg.
  Use an anchor to pull the boat off.

9.  When docking a single screw boat under normal circumstances, approach the pier:

sideways
at an angle perpendicular to the dock
at an angle of 25 - 45 degrees to the dock.
in reverse

10.  The slowest a boat can go and maintain heading control  is called minimum control speed.  This is accomplished by:

  proceeding at idle speed
  maintaining the engine in neutral.
  selecting a speed just below the point that the boat planes
  applying power intermittently in the idle range only as necessary to maintain movement and heading.
